“Interdisciplinary Cancer Service (SIC) at the Riviera Chablais Hospital in Switzerland is a service that join Oncology and Radiotherapy. It‘s a complete paperless service which use the Medical Electronic Record Elekta Mosaiq to share all the patient information. From the beginning, our objectives were to optimize clinical workflow and patient’s safety; it’s a reason why we have chosen the facial recognition technology from XECAN. That technology fulfills our requirements; simple, efficient, reliable and improve patient safety. The system is well accepted by the patient and it allows us to track the patient in the service.
Also, the use of RFID readers in the radiotherapy simulation room and in the treatment room is a simple way of documentation of all the accessories that are used for each patient’s treatment. That add-on is an improvement for patient safety and decrease the staff’s stress. That point allows staff to spend more time with patient that is positive for everybody.”
— Dr. Marc Pachoud, Chief Medical Physicist @ Riviera Chablais Hospital, Switzerland
“The Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven Hospital puts patient safety as our highest priority.
Our implementation of the XECAN RFID application has added an additional layer of safety. Active verification of the correct patient to the correct treatment plan helps to eliminate the potential for human error. The visual and audible alerts with any deviance also serves to engage our patients as part of the safety check, improving the patient experience.
Working with the XECAN development team, we were able to advance the clinical segment of the application resulting in increased clinical efficiency and optimization through data reporting. Our work is ongoing in this area and the XECAN team has worked exceptionally hard to customize the data to our ongoing specifications.
We have improved our clinical workflows through the use of the web based electronic whiteboards. Web based access to real time clinical workflow allows our physician team increased flexibility with their schedules as they can remotely identify where their patients are in the encounter process.
Working together with the XECAN team, we have successfully developed a customized product that has improved patient safety and is allowing us to optimize clinical workflows resulting in an enhanced patient experience.”
— Shelley Jolie RN, BSN, CORLN, Nurse Manager, DRO, Smilow Cancer Hospital @ Yale New Haven Hospital, United States
"In the radiotherapy department of Vastmanlands Hospital, Vasteras we looked for an automated system for check in of the patient for their daily treatment. We found out that XECAN could have what we looked for. The problem was that we use a drop-in system and the XECAN system couldn't handle that. Anyhow XECAN’s representative came to us in Sweden, and we had a discussion how on to solve the problem. XECAN decided to try to change their system to meet our demands. After some weeks of collaboration, we had the first version of the system up and running. For some months, we improved the system from what we learned day by day, and today we have an excellent system that really helps the logistics of the daily treatments, and save a lot of time. Together with all this we have also gotten a system that ensures that we don't treat the wrong patient and that every patient has the right accessories for their treatment. The patient safety has reached an almost ultimate level."
— Sture Eklund, Chief Medical Physicist, Hospital Vasteras, Sweden
“The Patient palm scanning technology from XECAN is a great way of observing the flow of a department and most importantly patient safety. Palm scanning technology eliminates any and all human error for identifying patients in treatment rooms. Also, the use of room RFID readers is a simple way of documentation of accessories used for each patient’s treatment. It is a great component for patient safety all around..”
— Mike Ahern, RT(T), Boston VA Medical Center, United States
“There have been errors at other places across the country, and RFID eliminates those risks. It’s easy to use, and it allows us to eliminate human error from the equation. We want to make sure we remain as personal as possible and deliver individualized care to our patients. But it’s also important to invest in technology that lets us stay as state of the art as possible with regards to being absolutely as safe as we can be. We’ve done that with this technology.”
— Harold Joseph Barthold, MD, BIDH Plymouth, United States
”This technology allows the RFID reader to detect the patient’s unique signal in the room. The computer won’t allow us to access another patient’s record while a different patient is in the room.”
— Claire Fung, M.D., Director of Radiation Oncology at BIDH Plymouth, United States
”Before the RFID system was in place, we would have to ask the patient to produce three forms of identification to properly match them with their treatment plans. Now, after an initial registration, the patient’s identification is verified automatically in one step. This gives us more time to talk to patients about things going on in their lives, helping them feel more at ease. We’re so pleased with the progress that we’re already thinking about expanding the RFID system to other parts of the hospital to potentially include staff and radiology accessories.”
— Natalie Campbell, Department Manager, BIDH Plymouth, United States
”RFID is simple to learn and implement in the clinical setting, and there are many benefits. Above all, RFID technology has the potential to increase patient safety, and this is always a step in the right direction.”
— Tracey Clark, R.T.(T), Norris Cotton Cancer Center Keene, New Hampshire, United States
”Patient safety is our top priority. By eliminating all manual intervention to automatically open the treatment chart for the patient who enters the procedure room, we can be certain that we have the ‘right patient, right site’ with every single treatment session. A fully integrated RFID-EMR solution represents a substantive improvement in patient safety. Our testing to date has shown the system to be highly robust”.
— Per Halvorsen, Director of Medical Physics, Alliance Oncology LLC, United States
"Alliance Oncology considers safe patient treatment a foremost priority and in the modern era of radiotherapy treatment, we use a variety of systems to deliver accurate, high-quality care. In an effort to move beyond the conventional tools in place at other facilities, we developed a relationship with XECAN to expand the capabilities of our electronic medical record (EMR) system. With the RFID tools that XECAN helped us implement, we have strengthened our system to better ensure that patients are uniquely identified throughout the department, particularly while receiving treatment on the linear accelerator. In early 2010, Alliance and XECAN developed a plan around using RFID as a tool for identifying patients and interfacing that identification with the EMR in place at Commonwealth Newburyport Cancer Center. Throughout the collaboration, XECAN met or exceeded all expectations by developing solutions well ahead of schedule and being available during all hours of clinical operation to ensure that the solutions worked appropriately. Bin, Barney, and the entire XECAN team have provided outstanding customer support throughout the entire process. Alliance is now positioned to implement RFID in a wider range of our facilities. As the EMR becomes a more integral part of healthcare, tools like the RFID system that XECAN worked with Alliance to develop will be essential. On a personal level, I feel very fortunate to have been a part of the development effort and I look forward to seeing the RFID – EMR system used to its fullest potential."
— Bruce Crawford, Senior Medical Physicist, Commonwealth Newburyport Cancer Center, MA, United States
"Radiation Safety is an important focus in Radiation Oncology. Alliance Oncology collaborating with XECAN we were able to address this very important issue in our clinics. We can guarantee, we have the right chart and right patient every time. Alliance Oncology is committed to providing the best patient care for all our patients. When explaining the use of the RFID lanyards to our patients, a smile of reassurance comes over their faces knowing that we here at Alliance Oncology have taken the extra steps to ensure the accuracy of their treatment each and every day. The use of the RFID technology can also help identify workflow issues in the clinic, which in itself can make for a better patient experience. When adding the benefit of asset management to your company, it makes it hard to argue, why one would not want to have this technology implemented. My experience working with XECAN has been pleasant and effortless. They have exceeded every target goal, taken all our suggestions and implemented them. They have offered around the clock support throughout the implementation. I would recommend XECAN to any clinic, hospital, or business to help them answer their needs."
